The Difference Between Cheap & Expensive Logos

By Eulene Ooi

Think about logos that are instantly recognisable, even to small children. Global brands across the globe spend millions of dollars every year to develop, refine and promote their brands because they know the direct impact it has on their sales and market share.

Pepsi paid more than $1 million for this refreshed logo

BBC paid a whopping $1,800,000 for this combination of white block letters against dark background logo

Now you might be thinking “That’s ridiculous! I can just get a logo from this site which only costs me 50 bucks!”. Well you are not wrong, logos can range from as low as $50 up to $1,000,000.

So the question is, what is the difference between a $50 and $1,000,000 logo?

The difference is that it comes with the process of designing a comprehensive and user-centered brand identity.

An all-encompassing brand identity is more than just a good looking logo with nice colours, it is a group of various facets forming one harmonious outcome.

The first step in establishing a good brand identity is to first understand the vision, mission, and goals of the brand. It is important to identify the WHY of the brand and then linking it to HOW the brand identity can contribute to the success of the business.

Next, is analysing a business' target customers such as their attributes, goals, fears and preferences. This process goes deep into the mind of the customers—What motivates them? What are the common pain points they face in their daily lives? Which brands resonate within them and why?

A user-centered brand identity is a brand identity with the right design elements that will attract the right customers. While the process of arriving at a brand identity that resonates within your targeted customers takes a lot of time, customer loyalty is more likely to be guaranteed when your customers resonate strongly with your brand.

Ever wondered why it is common to find Apple users not only staying loyal with the brand but also more than willing to expand the products under the brand despite the sharp price tag? That’s partly because they as consumers, can identify themselves with the clean and minimal identity that Apple employs.

It takes a lot of time, research and ideas to arrive confidently at the final brand identity that customers see. This cannot be paid with just $50.

There might not be much difference between what your business offers and what your competitors offer. However with a good brand identity, you will be better positioned in the minds of your customers.
